The extra cellular matrix contains hyaluronic acid (HA)
Hyaluronic acid is a gel like substance that draws water molecules to it and has the capacity to retain 1000 times its own weight in water. This gel like substance serves as a space filler and provides cushioning between joints and nerves, importantly hyaluronic acid also assists to maintain moisture within the skin, hair and eyes.

- HA is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory
- The body contains approximately 15g of Hyaluronic acid, 1/3 of which is degraded and synthesised daily.
- Half of the bodies Hyaluronic Acid is found in skin collagen
- It belongs to the compound group glycosaminoglycans (GAGs)
- GAGs is found on the surface of cells and the extra cellular matrix
- Other GAGs include heparin, heparin sulphate and chondroitin sulphate
